Sleep mode, powerbook screen flash

I just purchased a new 17 inch powerbook. I am running the newest OS - 10.4.5 - tiger is fully updated.

When my computer goes to sleep the screen goes black, but then the right side of the screen flashes light intermittently. It is a whitish hue light that quickly flahes on that side of the screen while in sleep mode.

Have you heard of this?

It is annoying - the light and I think it will drain my battery.

Any thoughts on a fix?

I had exactly the same problem - right hand side of the screen during sleep.
It seemed to be polling for some peripheral. Ihave a bluetooth mouse, and I turned it off before sleep -- that was not the cure.
I went into system prefs, and iin the bluetooth pane, I UNCHECKED the 'allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer'

Problem has now gone away . My next action would have been to switch off bluetooth before sleep.
