sleep mode

Hello,
I have an Imac G5 and love it. However, for whatever reason the automatic sleep mode no longer functions except by selecting in the Apple drop menu. I have re-installed software - no go! Any ideas please? Also, Mail after boot up drops the server almost always unless I use Safari first?????

Do you have any peripherals plugged in other than the Apple kbd & mouse? Do you have a server, or other service running in the background?
 
All 3 of my mac's in the past have suffered from flaky sleep functions.
Now I use a little faceless utility called "Sleep Assist", and sleep works without fail, everytime.
