I am trying to send more than 30 gigabytes over ethernet between my powerbook g3 lombard and my powermac g3 B&W and the transfer speed is about 500 kb per every 3 to 5 seconds. I used to be able to transfer data at much faster speeds between the two computers but now the connection has slowed down. I have a lot of data to transfer and i can't do it over 500 kilobytes every five seconds. Is there anything i can do to increase the speed? I tried different patch cables and used a different switch but had no success.

it seemed like that because the copy window showed around 500 kilobytes of transfer every few seconds. You would have to wait for a few seconds for it to copy a megabyte. Normally, it would send many megabytes at one time. Its like i am downloading from a remote host off the internet. I didn't get the number from anywhere, it is just going that slow.
It is still not clear what you mean. However, if you are seeing 500 kb/s or 500 kbps, then your LAN is behaving as a medium fast broadband connection. If you are seeing 100 kB, 610 kB, 1105 kB, 1660 kB, etc. with 3 to 5 seconds between updates, then your LAN is behaving as a weakedly fast broadband connection. Assuming the slowest speed, this would be equivalent to a 800 kpbs connection. The thing that you have to understand is that 30 GB is not a small amount of data. At this speed, you would transfer the entire datastream in 10 to 11 hours. Based on the information that you have provided--which is very little--and my own experience, this is not out of line. Be patient.

At that speed, yes, 10 to 11 hours is a good estimate... but I think his original question is why the network is going so slow... which it shouldn't be, assuming that each computer has a 100base-T port and that the switch/hub/router is also 100base-T equipped. If so, then 30GB shouldn't take more than 3 hours.
Can you describe the exact network setup you're using, including the protocol you're using to connect each computer to each other, the speed of all network ports on the computers and the hub/router/switch, and specific network settings for each computer and hub/router/switch? It sounds like traffic is being routed OUT to the internet, then back to your local LAN and into the other computer, which is unnecessary -- the router should be "smart" enough to figure out that each computer is on the local LAN and does not need to do this. I've seen this happen before with misconfigured routers or misconfigured computers.

I belive they are both 100base-T, the hub works fine (100 base-t). Other computers transfer speed at good rates. Maybe its the NIC card? I am transfereing between 2 100base -t computers and there is a hub connected to the router that is connected to our modem and these computers are hooked to the hub. I am transferring through AFP.
The odd thing is that i used the same protocol for the same computers on the same ports off the same hub and they sent their data at high speeds. Now, they transfer very slowly. However, i have been re-installing OS X numerous times on both systems, but i can't see how this would affect the network speeds. I have tried reinstalling the OS several times and still no luck.
