Slow mounting LaCie

I have a LaCie 320 gig external Firewire drive that worked fine in the past but for the last few months through Tiger to Leopard it has been very slow to mount. This started a while back when connected to my G5 and now continues with a new Intel iMac. It can take up to five minutes for the drive to mount and another five before it is ready to use. All during this time there you can hear the repeated clicking and whining as though it is trying to mount but without success until it eventually completes.

I have always used the drive daisy chained via FireWire 800 to a 500 gig Western Digital drive and figured it was just the cable so last night I tried with a 400 cable and then direct to the iMac bypassing the other drive but it was just as bad. Once it is properly mounted it appears to be OK but I am perplexed why its having these problems. Any ideas?

I've found the answer. The power unit though still visibly working appears to be underpowered and this is causing the LaCie to either spin down for no reason or fail to mount properly. I discovered this by trying the power unit from a LaCie DVD writer after which it worked immediately. I'll keep it going like this for the time being and hope it last for a while. It looks like there are no retailers in the UK who sell the power unit on its own.
