slow network between Quicksilver and Xserver

bogomips

BOTH
I have a Xserver connected to a HP4108 modular gigabit swicth.

Connected to the server, I have G4 Quicksilver and Mirrored doors, all running 1 Gb fullduplex.

The problem is that the Quicksilver models are having problems when copying large files, the copying will intermitted halt for a few seconds and then continue.

Cables have been checked, and the switch doen't report any packed loss or errors.
The MD models doesn't have any problems.

The server is running 10.2.3 server
The client are running 9.22

Have you tried connecting only the Xserve and the G4 without the switch? That could help finding if the problem lies with one of the computers or the switch. If it turns out to be one of the computers, I'll suggest calling Apple about it if it's under warranty :)

BTW, since the G4 is running 9.2.2, it could be some OS 9 related stuff. OS 9 generally doesn't handle large files very well - could be problems with caches or something

I had similar problems with my Quicksilver. I solved mine by installing an Asante PCI ethernet card. For some reason, my on-board ethernet had a compatibility issue somewhere. YMMV

I suspect it to be hardware related, as the the newer G4 MD are working okay.

I think I'll try an Asante NIC, and see if that solves the problem.

BTW I made a performance test with Helios Lantest:
Quicksilver 22Mb/s read
Mirrored door 34 Mb/s read
