Slow Network Connection

I run a Netcomm NB5540 wireless firewall router with a 20" iMac (Panther) and a PC (XP). The 5540 shares an ADSL internet connection to both machines. I have good download speeds (e.g. 165k actual) to the PC using ethernet cable or using wireless. The Mac has very slow speeds (3k actual). I've swapped cables, reduce the MTU settings on the 5540, tried everything!! I don't have a wireless card for the iMac to try but that would be interesting...

Any clues gurus on how to speed up the iMac connection?

iMac specific:
Did you connect the iMac (G4 or G5?) directly to the (unknown manufacturer and model number) ADSL modem? If so, did the upload / download speeds improve, to expected rates?
If yes, you eliminated the iMac as the problem source.

If no, consider visiting someone and connecting your iMac to their cable / ADSL modem. Again, did the upload / download speeds improve, to expected rates?
If yes, contact who (ISP or store) provided the ADSL modem.
If no, there is an iMac related problem.

Router related:
Just to be sure - the ADSL modem's Ethernet cable (and not either the PC or iMac) is plugged into the router's WAN port (see bottom of page 2), yes?

Among the 'tried everything!':
Did you reset the Netcomm NB5540 router?
Did you connect the iMac to each of the four LAN ports (numbered 1 through 4)?
