Slow Programs running on client

I am working with a Mac OSX 10.4.8 server running on a PowerPC G5. There's this problem with final cut pro on the client macs. fcp runs really slow and lags from time to time, especially when several users are using the program all at once. i'm a noob with servers, especially the mac ones, and i don't really know where to look in. the cpu usage (i used top) seems fine; nothing seems to be overused. dns setting is correct, i checked that too. I just don't know where the program is with the server that caused fcp to run so slow. I was thinking it might be problems with the drives not being enough the handle the workload with fcp or something like that.

thanks in advance.

I understand that you are running fcp on the server, while other users are using the same system for file access. This can decrease performance noticably without overloading the cpu load too much, because the harddisks are 'overloaded' in that situation.

In general it is not advisable to run high load programs on a server as both the programs decreases the server and the server (if used intensively) will decrease program execution.

For testing, make sure no users are using the server and check performance of the program. If oke, users are causing the slow performance.

If you are using fcp on a client, check if the program runs smooth, while having all files on the client itself. If smooth, than network / server traffic causes the low performance.

Otherwise the client maybe to slow for the application.

Good luck, Kees

actually, fcp is not running on the server (or at least not on the mac comp that runs the server). fcp is only installed on the client macs (the comps that actually login into the server). The server mac has really no programs other than those to manage the server. The client macs login into the server and opens fcp on the client macs, and their primary scratch disk/ files they save to are on the server (their storage space is on the server itself i believe).

thanks for helping!

Use my second suggestion and try working fully locally and check the performance. If oke, than either traffic load or server load is causing the slowness of the client.

Good luck, Kees
