Slow website connections

I have an Intel Imac and have been having some strange issues with the cable connection. When connected directly to the internet via the ethernet port anytime I try to connect to a website it sits there for a 30-60 seconds and then finally connects. I have checked internet speeds and everything is fine it just happens whenever I go to a website or a different page within the site. Streaming audio works fine as well.
The funny thing is I tried an Airport base station the other day and the speed was blazing and I was even picking up surrounding wireless nets from the neighbours and that was super fast as well. But as soon as I went back to plugging the cable directly into the mac it started running slow on the connects again.
Any advice you can offer would very much be appreciated.

Hmmn, we;d need to know more about your setup. Are you the only machine plugged in to the net

Do you run any programs that make a lot of internet connections such as BitTorrent? Due to piracy concerns some ISPs appear to throttle connections that look like they might be doing this, and some routers perform very badly when these or similar programs are running due to the very large number of connections they make (even if they are actually transferring at a very slow rate).

This could also be some form of DNS problem - where the page will load fast but it takes the computer a long time to find where it is. If its this rebooting/resetting your router might help, else speaking to your ISP.

Lastly have you tried a different ethernet cable and tried reseating the connections? Is often the simplest things that cause the problems. :)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried a new cable but I still have the problem. I don't understand why the internet runs faster on an Airport router than a direct plug in to the computer. I am the only machine plugged into the net and I am not using any programs that make a lot of internet connections. I am not on a router now and it is very slow. I'd be pleased to give you any extra set up info you need to help me with this.
