Small grey icons in finder?

Hi all,

Quick question here...what are those small icons in the bottom left hand corner of the finder windows (panther)? One looks like four small squares, and the other looks like a pencil with a line through it. I've searched all over and can't seem to find a good referenfce.

They indicate certain properties about the folder (or window) that you are currently viewing. The "checkerboard" image alerts you to the fact that you're viewing the window in the "icon" view. The pencil with a line through it indicates that you do not have the privileges to write to that folder.
