smtp keeps rejecting user password

I'm using Mail on OSX Lion and -- just tonight, for no apparent reason at all -- when the Mail application keeps saying that "the smtp server rejected the password for (my user name)." Why is this? I went to Keychain Access -- locked/unlocked my login keychaing (to no avail), ran a repair on my keychain password (to no avail). I've logged in successfully on the web version, I've restarted my computer, and still nothing helps. I could really use some help here. Thanks in advance.
 
Did you check with the email server to be sure it is functioning correctly? Did you using Mail's menu item 'Windows' and used "Connection Doctor" and see what the server is telling Mail? Is this a GMail server or some other email server?
