Software Center won't let me download xCode

Welcome all

I am trying to install xCode from the app store on OS X Lion, and when I click install, it goes into a zombie state... and then just stops completely several seconds later. Is there a download of xCode?

Yes. Go to the Mac App Store. It might be helpful to explain what happened to the copy of Xcode that shipped with your Mac and which version was it.
 
The Xcode installer can also be confusing.
When you download Xcode from the App store, clicking Install simply downloads the Xcode installer to your Mac. So, find the app named "Install Xcode", which should be in your Applications folder. Run THAT, and Xcode should then install.
