Software Equivalents

Yes, so I'm switching to a Mac, but, like many PC users, I have a long list of favorite applications that I'll miss without good equivalents on the Mac. So, humble users of MacOSX, would you please help me come up with rough "equivalents" of the rest of my favorite Windows applications.

FTP you can use Fetch or numerous others. Fetch is already available for the new intel range if you have one.

For compressed files such as .zip you can use Stuffit which is freeware.

Google Earth mac is out now.

If you go to resexcellence.com you can find info on changing boot screens, mouse pointers and all the other aesthetic stuff.

Not needed. No spyware exists for Mac OS X.
Fraghappy said:
Adobe GoLive CS2 - Is there a MacOS version? iWeb does NOT cut it.
Yes there's a Mac version. Did you even consider going to Adobe's website? :)
Fraghappy said:
Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platinum 3 - not needed?
Hm, for defragging, try iDefrag. For all the others, you can get free utilities on MacUpdate
Fraghappy said:
Avast! Antivirus
Not needed. No viruses exist for Mac OS X
Fraghappy said:
CursorXP Plus 1.31
Does this software have any purpose besides making your cursor look purdy? Seems like your typical spammed-software ;)
Fraghappy said:
Dev-C++ 4.9.9.2
Xcode
Fraghappy said:
DivX Create Bundle 6.0.3
DivX 6 for Mac

Fraghappy said:
JCreator LE 3.5.0
Again Xcode, or Eclipse
Fraghappy said:
JiWire Spotlock
Not sure about this. I saw Elektron but it's $300. You could also just use normal, safe practice when using Wi-Fi
Fraghappy said:
LogonStudio 1.0
Try Visage
Fraghappy said:
Nineteen54 0.9.9
Not sure what this is...
Fraghappy said:
PowerDVD - I assume there's an equivalent?
DVD Player (Apple's DVD player.. not sure what you use PowerDVD for)
Fraghappy said:
PuTTY 0.58
Terminal (built-in)
Fraghappy said:
SmartFTP Client
Transmit or Fetch or Captain FTP or RBrowser
Fraghappy said:
VisualBoy Advance 1.7.2
See MacUpdate's list of gameboy emulators
Fraghappy said:
ZipGenius 6.0.2
Built-in. You can compress files in the Finder by right-clicking a file and selecting Create Archive

DivX Create Bundle --> DivX 6 codec + QuickTime Pro
Dev-C++ --> Xcode
JCreator LE --> Xcode
PowerDVD --> DVD Player - included with MacOS X

You will do well to search Versiontracker.com and MacUpdate.com by category for your MacOS X applications and utilities. Between the two web sites, you will find virtually every available software title. Also, allow yourself to think beyond Mac ports of Windows apps. Mac-only apps--be they commercial, shareware, or freeware--deserve your consideration. You will be blown away by their quality.

ePSXe 1.6.0

There was an psx emulator called Firestorm for Mac OSX. But I don't know if it is still in development.

For other emulators visit: www.bannister.org

Not needed. No viruses exist for Mac OS X
I can't agree 100% with this statement. It might be that viri don't exist for OSX but you can still pass viri created for the Windows OS to other Windows users (forwarding attachements, sending/sharing infected files without knowlege etc.) In this case a anti virus app might be helpfull. Ecspecially if your mac is conneted to a Windows network.

There is a Antivirus program available for free: Try ClamAV: http://www.markallan.co.uk/clamXav/index.php

PowerDVD - I assume there's an equivalent?

Media Player Classic or VLC are also good choises.
VLC has the advantage to play any DVD from any region without the need to change your CD/DVD drive's region setting.

I would say Windows media player and equivs --> VLC (with Quicktime and WMP for mac as backups)

Defragging Mac hard drive is not really needed; HFS+ does not get fragged in use. Just use Disk Utility (included in OS X) every now and then to check permissions.

Cocktail and MacJanitor are two generic cleaners / fixer programs.

If you don't use M$ Office, you are even macro virus free.

Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 - Not needed, there is no known adware for the Mac.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0.2 - MacOS version
Adobe Audition 1.5 - Garage Band
Adobe Encore - iDVD
Adobe GoLive CS2 - Is there a MacOS version? Yes.
Adobe Illustrator CS2 - MacOS Version
Adobe Photoshop CS2 - MacOS Version
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5.1 - Final Cut Pro

Looks like you have all of these figured out.

Alcohol 120% - Roxio Toast is probably the best option here.

Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platinum 3 - not needed. Lets face it, you aren't going to have Windows problems.

Avast! Antivirus - Try ClamAV, an open source antivirus. There's also Virex, which is good.

Azureus 2.3.0.6 - MacOS Version - Yes

Capilio Software (Digital Camera Drivers) - MacOS Version - Use iPhoto instead, as it is far superior to the Caplio software.

CursorXP Plus 1.31 - Cursor effects such as mouse trails and so on are all supported natively in MacOSX.

Dev-C++ 4.9.9.2 - XCode is your main option here. If you really need to do Windows development, use Virtual PC.

DivX Create Bundle 6.0.3 - DivX is available on Mac as well.

ePSXe 1.6.0 - Try Flarestorm.

Final Draft 7 - Mac OS Version
FireDaemon - Not needed
Folding@Home Console - Mac OS version - Should be no problem.
Google Earth - Mac OS Version coming soon - out now, actually.
IconPackager - Not needed
IconX - Features built-in

iPod for Windows 2005-10-12 - Mac OS Version
iTunes 6.0.2 - Mac OS Version
- It'd be a sad day when you can't get Mac equivalents for Apple products. ;-)

J2SE Standard Edition 5.0_5 - Mac OS Version
JCreator LE 3.5.0
jEdit 4.2 - Mac OS Version

JiWire Spotlock - Looks like you're in luck here, too. http://www.jiwire.com/spotlock.htm
Konfabulator 3.0 - Dashboard built-in
LogonStudio 1.0 - Check out resexcellence.com for info about customising logon screens, etc.

Macromedia Flash 8 Professional - MacOS version
Mozilla Firefox 1.5 - MacOS Version
Mozilla Sunbird 0.2 - iCal
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 RC1 - Mail/Mac OS Version
- All of these should be ok

Nineteen54 0.9.9 - A puzzle game, I take it? I couldn't find this in Google

ObjectDock - Feature built-in
OpenOffice.org 2.0 - MacOS Version
PowerDVD - I assume there's an equivalent? Yes. The built in DVD Player app actually works on a Mac.

PuTTY 0.58 - Not needed. All of these features are built in, through the Terminal. You can easily setup a shortcut to SSH/Telnet/etc into a server.

Quicktime - MacOS Version - This should be no hassle.
Skype 1.4 - MacOS Version - Yep, and its actually pretty good
SmartFTP Client - I use terminal for FTP, though there are some good FTP clients out there. RBrowser, CaptainFTP, etc.

TI-Connect 1.6 - MacOS Version: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12680
Trillian Pro 3.1 - Adium
VideoLan VLC Player 0.8.4 - MacOS version Yes. Works nicely. Also, you can consider mplayer
VisualBoy Advance 1.7.2 - I have Mac versions of this. They work nicely.
WindowBlinds 5.0 - Not needed (Aqua looks good, unlike the WinXP ugliness)
ZipGenius 6.0.2 - Also not really needed, since there is ZIP support built in. You might consider getting StuffIt Deluxe if you need more options.[/QUOTE]

Wow, thanks, I wasn't expecting such a quick and helpful set of responses. My new MacBook Pro won't be here until late February, so I'll be stuck with the pain of Windows XP for at least another month, it seems, but I can't wait to switch over to MacOS.

Thank you so much again. :D

Ninteen54
This is supposed to read Ninteen64 (it's a N64 emulator). Sorry about that typo.

Hi FragHappy,
my experience is:
AdAware/Spybot - not needed

Get: MacFuse, TNEF's Enough, The Missing Sync, VLC, Windows Media Player.

I'va also discovered using the Dashboard for things that take time eg news RSS, weather, stock market reports, cinema times, tv results, timesheets etc - all the things non-document related that take time to find or do, either on the net, or regular things that shouldn't need an application to do.

Cheers!

Whoa. Fraghappy's post is over 15 months old and they've had their Mac for over a year. I imagine they're in a position to suggest their own software equivalents by now! =]

Oops. This is what happens when I don't read the dates on posts. Sorry about that.

You have raised a good point:
Fraghappy, after 15 months, what software equivalents etc do you use?
