Software Installation Problems

I recently tried to update from OS 10.2 to 10.2.8. Upon rebooting after the installation, I had a kernel panic. After trying a number of other solutions, I reinstalled OS 10.2 using the Archive and Install option, which solved the initial problem. However, after doing this Safari no longer worked. I've tried reinstalling Safari, but the installer always reports that "there were errors in installing the software." The log gives the error as

Error detected
Name: NSGenericException
Reason: *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)

I've the installation several times and have also repaired permissions. I'm very close to giving up and installing Firefox instead. What is going on?
