Software Update doesn't automatically check for updates.

Software Update doesn't notify me anymore of updates like it did in Panther. I don't find out about updates unless I see about one on my Macworld RSS feeds. I have my preferences set to check daily and to DL important updates in the background and notify me when they're ready to install and it does neither. Does anyone know how to fix this and to get it to automatically check for updates and notify me?

Make sure that the date and time is set up correctly. Otherwise, that will cause problems with Software Update.
 
You're better off not having it check and download automatically. You should check here and http://www.macfixit.com before installing updates to see what problems may be caused by them first.

But, you can try trashing the 'com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist' file in user>library>preferences and see if that helps.
