Software Update hangs at 'checking for new software'

I did a clean install of Tiger, tried Software Update but all I get is the popup with 'checking for new software...' and a progress bar that is about 10% filled. I could watch this for hours, but I don't feel like.

Tried repairing permissions, installed 10.4.1 manually, seeked for messages in console.log or system.log, cleared (~/)Library/Cache and deleted Library/Perferencecs/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist, tried from another user account.

haven't partaken in the Tigris madness yet, but I had the same prob on my current OS. Software Update installed iTunes 4.8 and started checking for new software again. Got stuck at the 45% (approx) mark and stayed there for abt 30 minutes at which point I forced SU to quit.

I would clean out some Cache files in the Library and see if that does it. The next step is DiskWarrior to check the health of the director, DiskUtilities will not check the system as well as DiskWarrior. There is a new version for Tiger.

Although it was an odd solution. I had this same problem and fixed it this way.

It turns out that I am using a wireless network. Under System Preferences -> Network-> TCp/IP settings.

I had Configure IPv4 set to -> Off

Even though I was perfectly well connected to the net via Aiport (and these setting worked with 10.3.x, this seemed to throw Software Update into a fit of delusion.

Simply changing this setting to DHCP (even though I don't use the Ethernet port except in rare cases when I share the connection via hardwire with another machine) made everything work just fine.
