Some sounds not playing

I have an iMac running OS 10.4.5. I can play CDs and listen to music with iTunes but I suddenly (and for no reason known to me) stopped being able to receive BBC radio programmes via the BBC site's "Listen Again" facility. I have a broadband connection and that works fine for surfing. When playing videos with Real Player or Windows Media Player the video plays but without sound.
Can you help? Shall I expect an email response or should I look on your web site- this is my first query!

Try going to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilites > Audio MIDI Setup. Make sure "Audio Output" is set to 44100.0 Hz, if not, set it to that.

Some applications like Audacity will change this setting when running to a higher amount, and if the program crashes without properly quitting, it stays set that way, which causes some sound to work and most to not work.

Have you tried upgrading to version 10.4.6? I recommned downloading the Combo Updater from Apple instead of going through Software Update (in case something goes wrong). Be aware that this upgrade will require TWO reboots: it will reboot once after it's installed and then another time as the Mac is booting up. It also might take a while to complete, so find something interesting to do in order to fight the urge to hard-shutdown the Mac by holding down the power button. ;) (Trust me, many people have complained about hosing their systems because they got impatient with the update...just search here to see what I mean.)

The other thing you might want to do is download OnyX. It's a very good maintenance and problem solving program.

Of course, you might want to first repair permissions before doing any of the above mentioned procedures. I also recommend doing a Disk Utility repair by booting from the install discs and selecting to Launch Disk Utility once you're at the install welcome screen, that way you can repair the drive if it needs it (you can't repair the system drive if you're bootted from it....you can only verify the disk).

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I used Audio MIDI Setup to change the output frequency to 44100 Hz and my sound came on. Thanks too for the tip to use OnyX. I had tried repairing disc permissions but to no avail.
