Sony DVD downloading to iMovie 08

Have a Sony DVD403 which is listed in Mac's compatible camcorder web site as compatible with iMovie 08. Shop at which I was reviewing an IMac couldn't import my video to iMovie, it recognized the video.
This is an old problem but I thought iMovie 08 had solved it.
Anybody know the step by step procedure to import?

Did the iMac recognize your camera at all? From the apple site: Note: Some iMovie ’08 compatible random access devices have both a USB and FireWire port. These camcorders must only be connected using the USB port.

Yes it did. "Importing from Camera" showed the folder and its contents, however, the "Import button" was not highlighted. Tried "Importing from Movie", same results. My Sony only has USB.
