Sony HDR-XR200E incompatible with mac?

Hi,

I just purchased a Sony HDR-XR200E camcorder. The Operating Guide & accompanying CD focus squarely on Windows; there is a small section advising how to import/download the still photos onto Mac and I have done this no problems.

However importing the movies is not so easy. I came across this link and followed the instructions, but iMovie doesn't seem to recognise the camcorder (http://www.sony-asia.com/support/resources/en_AP/html/Usefulinfo/Transfer_video/macHDDusb.html).

Do I need to download any drivers or other software?

Thanks,

Richard

This is a hard drive camcorder so you need to treat the videos like they came off an external hard disk. Plus what format are the videos in? What version of OS X are you using?

I have had loads of issues with trying to get the mac to hook up with any of the new cameras, I am using imovie 2009 but have used i movie HD and i Movie 2008.

Well here is where I am, bought a JVC SD camera, it hooked up and was recognized once I downloaded the Streamclip and bought the mpeg 2 software from mac, I don't remember what it was but there are other threads tell you what and where, one of these made the mac recognize the camera I would think it was the mpeg 2 software. Video into the mac was grainy and no good for me so I bought a Sony DCR- SR 47, same problem but a little better, but the quality still was not as good as I would like. I do like the Sony cameras so much more, the touch screen and the action of the camera is much better vs JVC. Next I went for the HDR-XR100, 4 mega pixel. This video is substantially better into the mac and I am much more impressed. It hooks up with the name of the camera and has no issues with poor quality since i think the original is so large, even though I think you still loose a bit into the mac.

I think that you need to have the software from mac, $19.95 as I remember and possibly the MPEG Streamclip. The only way that I can import is using I Movie 2009 (not 2006 or 2008) and not Streamclip directly.

Well this is all I have found out if you have anything else please add it.
