My daughter is trying to format her Sony microvault memory stick on a Mac using a downloaded .EXE file from Sony. When she clicks on it, the Mac tells her there no application associated with the extension. Is there a solution to this dilemma?

A .exe file is a WINDOWS program file. You are trying to run a Windows program on OS X.

You can use windows emulators to run an .exe on a mac, but the kind you will need depends on the architecture of your mac (PPC or Intel).

Why does your daughter need to format her Micro Vault. Flash drives usually work on Macs out of the blister pack. Is the Sony device different?

It was formatted initially on a windows computer and it is now performing badly due to being nearly full. Deleting files does not free up space on the drive. Formatting has done the trick in the past.

I would try OS X's Disk Utility. It's pretty good at formatting most file systems. You'll find it in the Applications/Utilities folder, and the memory stick, when connected, ought to appear in the column down the left side of the window. Select it, then click on the tab in the right side of the window named Erase. Follow the instructions listed.
