Sophos Antivirus shows Hard Drive errors

I run a Mac OS 10.4.11, with 1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM memory. I'm not really tech proficient but I was hoping someone could help. I ran a check using my Sophos Antivirus program which showed zero threats but came up with about 153 errors on my hard drive. I haven't had any problems at all but it makes me nervous to know that those errors are there and that I may run into future problems.
I opened my disk utilities but the repair disk option was dimmed. I've read online that I may need to use a start up/install disk option in order to run a repair but I'm not sure how to do that. Is there a way to repair the disk so that it cleans out the errors?

What are the errors -- specifically? Please post the error messages you see verbatim.

You can try and repair errors on your hard drive by booting from the original OS X install/restore CD/DVD that came with the computer (pop CD in drive, reboot, hold and keep held down the 'c' key until the system boots from the CD), then running a "Repair Disk" with Disk Utility.

Your directions did let me repair the problems. From looking in the error log on my Sophos, it appears that many of the errors were files that were either not located or permission was denied. After repairing, most of the errors disappeared. That was a super quick answer. Thanks!
