Sound on the 15" MacBook Pro

I'm watching an episode of Lost on my notebook and there is a scene where someone says something in the background and it freaked me out because it sounded like it came from behind me. I've replayed it again and it was thing. In fact, I showed someone else and it freaked them out too. How is that possible with only two speakers in the macbook pro? it is only two speakers right?

They work much better with earphones in. Virtual Barber is by far the most impressive.

BTW what episode and season of Lost? I wanna check it out...
