I was sent an e-mail with sound recordings attached.
When I tried to open the sound recordings I got the message "Word cannot locate the server application for SoundRec objects".
Do I need to download an application onto my imac G5,version 10.3.9, 1.8 Ghz?

This is the first time I have used your service so please don't get too technical!

With Thanks

So let me make sure I'm understanding this... when you click on a soundfile that is attached to an email, it launches WORD?!. Odd.

Save the file to your dektop (easily done by simply clicking on the soundfile and draggin it to your desktop). Then go to the desktop, select the sound file and choose "Get Info" from the File menu.

Near the bottom of the info window, you will see "Open With". Click on that to open the submenu (if it isn't already open) and choose iTunes, or Quicktime Player from the list. Then, underneath that window, click "Change All".

That ensures that from now on, whenever you click on a file of the same type, it will open with that program.

Followup question: What kind of sound file is it? Perhaps someone has sent you an odd filetype that OS X doesn't immediately recognize. But it should never have Word open it.... that's just weird.

OOOOooo.... i know what he's talking about. i don't get it either. essentially what's happening is theres some sound files WITHIN word that you're trying to open (in my case, its these lil' speaker icons that have sound in them, but i downloaded this thing from a certain webite, not email). it's not necessarily a music type thing is it?

I'm new to this, so please be patient. I have soundrec objects in a word file (it's a listening assignment for my son's Chinese class), and I get the same message - "word cannot locate server application..." - when I click on the graphic. On a pc, the sound file (a short little blip of a thing - a short phrase in Chinese) plays in Word (or Works).

I tried dragging the object to the desktop, but it is saved as a picture clipping "Picture clipping.pictClipping". Way too wierd. Any suggestions?

well...i'm in the same situation. i, too, need to do my chinese homework with files downloaded from the web. i have a feeling that it has something to do with how when it comes to made-for-windows programs, there's always a spread of a few versions in between the newest, windows compatible version of something and the just-translated-to-mac version.

Get Apple's excellent(and getting better) iWork suite or just the Pages app, Apple's answer to Word, which is all you need.

Apple offers a fully functional 30-day trial:

http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/

It uses it's own service to play the sounds directly off the document as it was intended in Word.
You may find that it can wean you off Office completely(run a slick, Apple app in its place!)
It opens up every word document I've ever thrown at it and is seamless in its conversions.(My Chinese homework necessitated this exploration) I hope this works for you!

So I have the same problem. My finance prof put a sound file in a word document. I tried downloading iworks and opening the word file there, but it gave me an error that it couldn't import the attachment. Now what do I do?
