sparseimage will not mount

I recently turned on filevault on my new Powerbook G4 15"... two days later my entire home directory was missing... along with all my files... the PB only being a week old I had not backed-up...

I tried to open the sparseimage file that filevault left for me but it will not mount... tried the Disk Utility and followed the instructions at apple.com to no avail...

I just want to get in to the file and retrieve some important files... in this possible?

Try creating a new user, log in as the new user, then mount the sparseimage with your previous username and password.

Other than that, and if that works, I would be hesitant to turn on FileVault again. Unless you've got nuclear bomb plans or sensitive credit card information stored in your user folder, I would leave it off -- your account password should provide enough security for your data.

Which instructions at Apple did you follow? Can you provide a link? Is it this one:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25695 ?

How is FileVault nowadays? I held out on using it in early Panther because of the bugs it had; haven't heard much about it since.
