Spinning wheel of death?

My Imac is going to the spinning wheel quite often. I have done a clean reinstall.. Usually it will lock in safari when there is a drop down menu.,.
After I cannot force quit I reboot from the button on back.. when It reboots It usually locks on login.. and I can safe boot it.. When in Safeboot it works fine.. I have unplugged everthing except mouse and keepboard..
Any help in finding problem would be apreciated. The screen is developping lines on it.. I am not sure if that is related or not?

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
SMC Version: 1.1f5

If you have done a complete clean install (erase and install) and the spinning is still there sounds like either a failing MotherBoard or Hard Drive.
The lines also point to the MB. But Pull down menu on Safari would relate to software in my opinion. Have you run Disk Utility on the drive? If there are no errors could be the MB.
Tech Tool Pro would be a good way to get deeper results from tests.
