Sporadic Performance of Photo Booth and Front Row Remote Control

Sometimes Photo Booth and the Front Row remote control will work, sometimes not (they seem to have a strong relationship). Occasionally, when an attempt to open Photo Booth is made, a message appears that there is no camera attached, even though a camera is an integral part of this iMac G5! Also, the remote control is dead, and the securuty panel in System Preferences shows no trace of a button that allows control of the remore receiver and "pairing." Frustratingly, the two sometimes in fact do work OK, but it's hard to track down the conditions under which they do, such as the number of periferals turned on or off, and whether the computer is "restarted," or shut down completely and started again from scratch. Apple support had no solution other than to replace the remote control, but there is no change. Is this a common problem with this iMac G5? If so, is there anything planned for Apple to do anything about it? If it's not a common problem, what am I doing wrong? Is there anyone out there that has had the same problem?
