Spotlight Breaks Applications' Launch Ability

I recently had a problem with my mobile user account on my Macbook pro (Leopard). I received instruction to purge the cached user info and log in for the first time (again), which fetched account details from our AD. My original problem seemed fixed but then I noticed...

Applications that are launched from Spotlight do not work properly. The ones that require a keychain produce messages that the keychain cannot be found. If I select "Reset to Defaults" nothing happens. The message persists after app restarts.

However, if I launch an application by clicking its icon in the Applications folder, everything works. The first time I launched the app it produced the same "cannot find keychain" message. I cleared out its keychain and proceeded. Subsequent launches went fine. Things also work as expected if the application is launched from the dock.

What is Spotlight doing to the app that is making it fail to see the same keychain as when I launch the application through finder or the dock?

Thanks,
Scott
