"Spotlight quit unexpectedly"

I really need help with the situation I'm currently having with my Macbook. I updated the system software a few months back, as suggested. When I turned the computer back on, none of the applications would load and the spotlight option was gone. Everything that I click does not open, and causes the "spinning wheel of death" to appear for minutes at a time. I can't get to my system utility because the system preferences icon that was in my bottom bar dissapeared and I no longer have the option of spotlight to just find it. NEED HELP ASAP. My laptop has been like this for a good 2 or 3 months now.

It would really help to know exactly which update you applied, and which version of OS X you're running on which hardware.

If you applied a system point update (like Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update or similar), then the fix may be as simple as downloading the "Combo" updater from Apple that matches the update you applied and re-installing said Combo updater.
