Spymac launches 1GB free email!!!

soulseek

It's set to groove
as with Google, spymac.com offers from today a 1GB free email!.
wow that impressive, and they did it before google!!
im just wondering, how can i have so many free things from a site like this, and why there is a need to raise money for macosx.com which practically offers nothing apart from a mac forum...

That’s a good point man, what upgrades do you need? What machine is this site running from at the moment? Seams to be working fine atm, after all it is just a forum and some photos so why is all that money needed for upgrades? However this is a post for another thread, so I will end it here.

Spymac has a number of banner ads that we dont have... And is funded by some outsided sources, go do some spy work on SpyMac =)

And yes, they are always slow to me, no matter what machine or what connection I am on...

And just a side note, we arn't ran by a company, we are people... with skin.. and hearts and what not... and dont have an unlimited ammount of money.

if u mean those small banners at the top that i dont even notice on my 12 inch powerbook. than yes. it has adds.
but if it is needed for me to have a 1GB , and to provide overall functionality to the site and forum .... that they have. and macosx.com does not have.. then yes . its worth it!

I bet you you wouldn't ever get near 1 gig of email.

They can offer it, because none of the users will ever reach 1 gig... google is trying something out where no one deletes email, and they have a system that searches and archives the emails...

I suggest if you are interested in debating why you dont have this here, or who's better, go to the site discussion forums, or email the moderators.

And again, I would hope you do some research on spymac, they have a company that they are backed by... this site is ran by working people who arnt making loads of money... this site cost money to run.

No one is forcing you to support the site.

Also, just another little thing:

Your whole, why can spymac offer this and macosx.com cant question is just as silly as asking why Burger King doesnt offer Coke products, but McDonalds does... Thats the way it is... And for me, I like Coke so much, I'll go to McDonalds over Burger King...

i wasnt questioning why macosx.com doesnt offer 1GB email, im sure if u can read english, ull understand if u reread my post!!!

i know that this site isnt backed up by any company...
but if u wanted backing up by us, ud at least take care of the mods...
with such moderators, u aint gettin any money from me. i dont waste my money!!!
(it would be at least logical for a moderator in a mac forum to have MORE macs than windoze pcs, not the other way around)

Spymac has grown by 42k registered users on Saturday, to over 100k as of this morning... quite a spike in membership.

I wonder if everyone sent themselves (100) 10meg emails if they would be able to handle it. Probably not. I think they bit off more than they can chew on this one.

with 100000 registered members, and still they dont have any problems,
they just claim their site is not as fast!(for now)

Well, they probably have 4 or 5 servers to handle all those people.

Um, try over 40 servers! We even got a few more to handle the influx of new users! We got over 700 images posted in one day after that announcement too!

Way fun!

Just a curiosity, ileneh (welcome on board, by the way! ) - where does spymac get its money to run the site and the services? I saw a one page advertising for spymac in some big mac magazine last week, and I bet that isn't very free either (to advertise in that magazine that is).

Ilene,

I realize your a hired hand on that site... but I think you should talk to the bigwigs (ha) at Spymac and have them come clean with what has been happening on the financial side. Spymac doesn't make $$$ by ads, and prior to Spymac 3, never had all the hosting and other features to make $$$. Yet, 42 servers later (why??) here you are.

Obviously a sugar daddy has come into the picture... In light of the internet dot.bomb... I think it would be interesting to know the financial matters behind offer 1GB free email. Which we all know is anything but free for Spymac.

?!

Thanks for the welcome, but I've been here for months, just never posted anything before :) Got out of the forum habit after I left MacFixIt Forums.

Spymac had a 1 page ad in the May issue of Macworld magazine. Interesting ad, imho.

It's curious how you folks ask how Spymac is funded, I never see that come up on other sites. I'm not privy to the finances of the organization, so I can't answer. Although, even if I did know, I wouldn't answer, because that kind of information is usually confidential.

You folks see how many PC users joined and are asking about the Mac? That's amazing! We might get a few switchers outta that 1GB email service!

i find spymac very interesting.
i read somewhere that there gettin many windows visitors ! how cool is that ?

with spymac 3 they have the opportunity to make switchers. unlike some other forums, that probably are switching ppl back to the dark side :p

The question should be, Could they support the large amount of users that will be flocking thier way? They will need some serious cash!!!
