Stacking ikons

Been having problems with my iBook recently, and had to resort to reformatting the HD and reinstalling 10.2 and then upgrading to 10.3.8

Now, here's a funny one.... I have eight ikons on the right edge of my screen, from top to bottom (like I'm sure most people do, all very neat and orderly). Whenever I try and save a ninth file to the desktop, it places the ikon over the lowest [bottom right] ikon.

And it keeps on doing it! Can stack ten on top of the eigth item if I really want!

a) It's a bit of a pain
b) Is it a sign of [more] impending doom?

Any ideas?

In the Finder's menubar, select View>Show View Options, then select "Keep arranged by"... If you have merely selected Snap to Grid, without choosing how you want the icons arranged, then you will get these stacking Icons.
 
No can do.

Neither "Keep arranged by" nor "Snap to grid" are enabled.

Though I've just cleared my desktop (other than HD!) and pasted twenty items in, and it does that all neat and nicely, with no stacking!
