Hey there...brand new mac user here.

i recently prurchased a mac from a music professor...and i am LOST.

is there a way to start fresh? I don't have the OSX Leopard program, and would really like to not have to purchase one, if possible...i would like to test the mac waters before i invest more $$ into it.

much thanks!

I can only say one thing:
Purchasing a computer without the operating system install CDs/DVDs is like purchasing a car without keys: useless.

You need the OS install CDs/DVDs. There is no way to completely wipe the computer and start fresh without them. Not only that, but now you're stuck pretty much using the user account that the music professor set up. In addition, the OS install CDs/DVDs contain utilities for checking hard disk integrity, resetting passwords, and, most important, reinstalling the system.

While you can hobble along for a while without the OS install CDs/DVDs, I guarantee that in the near future you will encounter a situation where you will not be able to continue without them.

Get some, immediately. The cheapest option would be to contact the seller of the computer and ask that he/she kindly "complete the purchase" by including the original CDs/DVDs that came with the computer. After all, they're no good to him/her now anyway since the software license travels along with the computer, and they should always truck along with the computer itself, never being separated -- it would be like the seller of a car only selling the car and keeping the keys.
