Start up problems!

I'm running 10.3.9 on a g4 450. When I start up, the normal rotating ticker spins up on the grey screen, and the apple sits for a while. After an abnormally long time, the apple switches to a big O of equal size, with a diagonal line going thru. Kinda like the red circle on a no U-Turn sign, but colored grey. The machine never progresses past that. Safe booting works, which is how I'm typing this now. But normal start up is no good.

I tried restarted using of my OSX 10.3 cd and I ran the repair disk utilities, but it has not helped when I selected the hard disk for start up again. hmmm. Help!

In Accounts PreferencePane, disbale all Startup Items and see if you can log in normally.

Also go to the Startup Disk preferencePane and select your boot disk.
