Hi!

I have a new Flat Panel iMac and the brillant harmon kardon Soundsticks/iSub combination - and they work like a charm - but the Mac OS Startup chime is not played through them - have you any idea why and what i could do?

no ideas. but i have missed my startup chime for quite a long time on my quicksilver, and am beginning to suspect my h/k sound sticks as well.

I suspect it is because the Soundsticks are USB devices.

I have noticed that when I plug in my speaker set via a regular analog jack into my PowerBook's headphone jack, the startup chime will play through them. However, if I'm using my iMic USB sound adapter with the spekers, the startup chime will not play through them.

Guess that's one of the cons of USB speakers

This happens to me too. I think it's because when you startup the OS doesn't read any USB stuff right so it just goes to the computer's default speakers. The SoundSticks and other USB speakers are only used when the OS has started up and the drivers are running.
