We have a networking problem at work that has at least half a dozen PC techies scratching their heads. Please bear with me whilst I explain the problem as fully as I can. If anybody is still with me by the end, I would really appreciate your comments. We have 3 employees that are based on one of our customers sites. We installed an ADSL connection which is shared between our 3 employees via a 4 port switch. This ADSL connection is primarily for FTP and email. However, these employees also need to access our customers network to use network printers and some file servers that reside on our customers network. In addition, our customers network has what we believe is a VPN connection to their head office some 100 miles away where a central server is based. The network layout is as follows. Our mini 'ADSL network' is a standard 192.168.0.x range and is connected to the MAC's via a second network card that we installed in each MAC. The built-in network card is attached to our customers network and is dynamically assigned an IP address in the range of 129.10.10.1 to 129.10.10.254. The remote file server has an IP address if 192.10.1.40.
Now for the problem. When the in-built network card is set as the priority in Network configuration, our employees can access the local network and the remote server via the VPN. However they cannot access the internet via the ADSL on the second NIC (because the in-built network card is being used to access the internet). When the second NIC is set as the priority, the users can then access the internet AND the local network resources but NOT the remote files server via the VPN. I assume this is because the MAC see's that the remote computer is not on either of its local networks so goes out to the internet to try and find it. Basically we need to be able to acces the Internet, our customers local network and the remote file server all at the same time but we don't seem to be able to do this. I suspect I need to set up a static route that tells the MAC to connect to the remote server (129.10.1.40) via a specific network card and a specific router but nothing we have tried has worked so far.
Sorry for the lengthy post but I wanted to ensure that I gave you all the necessary info so that you could all fully understand my problem. If I have left anything out, please let me know and I will gladly fill in the gaps.
Thanks in advance.
