Still Unable to boot up

I have googled this issue and found so many different ways to try and fix this but nothing worked. I did the fsck -fy and my Macintosh HD appears to be ok. Then I tried to reset the permissions using the following processes in single user mode:

Reboot into single user mode (hold Option S while booting until it switches to text mode)

At the single user prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy

This checks the filesystem integrity

Then type: /sbin/mount -wu /

This mounts the root filesystem as read/writable.

Next type: /bin/chmod 1775 /

This will correct the permissions for your / directory

Type: /bin/sync

This will make sure the change is written to the filesystem

Type: exit

This did nothing to help the situation. I am still unable to establish the connection to the default WindowServer. Also, when I boot up holding down the option key, my HD and Install DVD are both Xed out.

Xed out?
The icons that show in the Option-boot screen will have Xes, because they designate an OS X boot volume. You should wait until the 'busy' cursor changes back to an arrow, then click on the boot drive that you want (your OS X installer DVD, for example), then click the right-facing arrow.

Or, am I misunderstanding what you have described?
