When I started my Macbook up, after the gray screen with the apple sign, a stop sign appeared on the screen and I couldnt use my laptop as normal. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? thanks so much!

Make sure you stop, because the newer models have the iSight camera, and it will take you picture if you continue. Apple will send you a failure to stop ticket.

Right . . . relax . . . welcome to the fora!

1. Post all of the specification you know of your Macbook such as:

  • 1. Model: Macbook black, white, . . .
    2. OS: OS 10.4.0, 10.4.11, 10.5.5, et cetera
    3. Processor, Hard Drive, RAM

2. What you were doing before this happened?

3. Can you reboot with the Installations disks--allowing you to go to Disk Aid?

4. Can you "Safe Boot?"--press Shift key when you start up and hold it until you see "Safe Boot."

There is no stop sign associated with Mac startup. You see a stop sign at a road intersection. Could you be seeing a prohibitory sign (as in "you are prohibited from continuing"; a circle, not a stop sign). If so, it means the bootx file was not found. Either the HDD has a corrupt file system, or the bootx file is missing, renamed, corrupt, or moved.
