Katharine sent this over to me… Thought you might find it provocative.

Has anyone else had this expereince? Is this Thunderbird or my machine?

My default character encoding for both incoming and outgoing mail in Thunderbird (2.0.0.23) is Western (ISO-8859-1).

Is the problem in the default? There are four other "Western" choices.

Any ideas on how to clean this up?

Two things:
  • I would upgrade to Thunderbird 3.0.1.
  • Western (ISO-8859-1) is probably the most popular character code in the US. My guess is that the sender is unknowingly using some other encoding scheme. You can search through the options until you find one that works flawlessly for your problematic messages, or if you understand the messages, then you may just live with the wrong character code.

I have avoided upgrading to Thunderbird 3 because of problems with integrating Lightning. However, this problem appears to have been solved and I have now upgraded.

Wonderful, fast responses. Many thanks. I do appreciate having this community out there.
