Strange Audio Problems

Hi all,
I have a weird problem that I can't find answers to anywhere. My audio has suddenly failed, in some games, flashplayer and .mpg's (in quicktime, and .mov's work fine), but not iTunes, finder or other games. It's rather frustrating and confusing. What controls the audio for flash and quicktime? It happened very suddenly and I'm unsure of the cause. Everything seems up to date. I'm running OS 10.4.3 on a 1.8GHz iMac G5. Hope someone can help.

There have been many similar reports here (1, 2, 3), and for some reason nobody's quite figured out yet, simply launching GarageBand solves the problem.
