Strange pointer problems after opening new tab in Safari

Hi all,
Had this problem for some time now and it has just recently started to really bug me so here I am.

My system is a G4 Powerbook 1.6 GHZ, 1 GB RAM, running up-to-date Panther and Safari. No weird safari plugins (that I know of).

Problem is intermittent, and usually only starts after the system has been turned on for some time. I originally noticed it when I tried to open a new tab in Safari by middle-clicking a link.

Instead of opening the link in a new tab, nothing at all happens. The system then goes into a strange state where the mouse pointer is stuck as a "hand" symbol wherever I place it in the Safari window. Also the dock does not react to moving the mouse pointer over it (it does not zoom, and the titles of applications are not displayed). If I select an item from the dock it will run and zoom at the same time, but then the dock remains "frozen" in the zoomed state until I click somewhere else.

I can clear the problem by alternately clicking on the safari window and my desktop background for a while, or sometimes by dragging an item in the dock to a different location. However after this problem has occured the first time it then becomes impossible to open a new tab in Safari using a middle-click without inducing the problem all over again.

(Note that right-clicking a link and selecting "open link in new tab" still works fine)

I have only seen one other reference to this problem on the internet (http://www.procata.com/blog/archives/2005/04/19/expose-and-safari/) despite a thorough Googling, so I'm not very hopeful in finding a solution, but please let me know if you have seen this problem before...

Thanks,

- Steve

More info: I have tried resetting safari and removing the com.apple.safari.plist file, all to no effect.

However, I have also discovered that the problem is not specific to Safari. In fact clicking the middle mouse button at any time will cause the system to become unstable as described above.

What kind of mouse are you using? If it's a third party mouse (i.e not a Mighty Mouse) then it's most likely a driver issue. Download and run USB Overdrive, a very good tool for assigning functions to any USB device with buttons. It's free if you don't mind a little reminder every time you startup. It's always worked great for me.
