Stuck in console mode on Panther

This is what it says.

Type mount -uw / and press the return key.
Type rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone and press return.
Type reboot

Ok - so you did try just typing exit at the prompt?

The only other thing i can think of is to try single user mode - reboot the computer and press and hold the command and s keys.

If this works, then type:

Type mount -uw / and press the return key.
Type rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone and press return.
Type reboot

well i did it and it still comes up as promt and yes I tried exit and I get the cursor and blue BG then it switches to console again. Would a strong magnet work??

Try this:

Type rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

press return

Type rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

press return

Type reboot or exit, press return

If the OS X disk will not boot, i doubt that a linux cd would
boot - as for the strong magnet comment, i hope you were joking.... lol

My bag of tricks is empty - my advice would be to take the computer
to an Apple Store and maybe they will help you out without screwing
you out of too much $$.
