Stuck on Apache Default Web Page

hi,

i'm using osx 10.4.7 and have messed-up my ability to access the web.

everytime, regardless of browser or url i attempt to navigate somewhere i get the local apache default page.

i'm connected to the web fine as i can ping my isp and other sites, my proxy config is correct and when i use this computer instead of the one i screwed-up on the same physical ethernet cable, no problem.

now, page two as p harvey would say.... i did go into terminal and enter the "sudo apachectl start" command and "sudo apachectl stop". so, i must have screwed something up by doing that....

any replies are much appreciated.

thanks,

mike

Is this happening in one browser or several (eg Safari v. Firefox)? Can you email from the problem machine? Also, what happens if you turn off Apache (personal web server) from the sharing control panel preference?

Have you checked your hosts file? Log in as Admin (may need to turn on hidden files) to find it. That file can be set to associate domains with IP's such as your local machine (127.0.0.1) -- it probably isn't the issue here unless you installed some funky ad blocking software that re-wrote the hosts file (common in windows world).

Must you use proxy settings? In my 10 years of Mac consulting I have never had to configure a proxy for any of my machines or any of my clients. Therefore, the proxy settings to me are suspect.
