Suggestion for forum moderators

I've noticed that most of the posts (especially on the hardware and software forums) are repetitive. Same issues are raised over and over again by different individuals and the solutions are easily found by searching the forum instead of posting a new thread. Case in point: I wanted to start a new thread in the Software forum asking for advice on how to play AVI files in Quicktime. Instead, I searched the forum for "codecs" and found exactly what I was looking for. One way to go about it would be to post an advisory note not to post till you've searched the forum or to give links to relevant forum search results.

I've seen this suggestion posted before ;) (seriously).

It's a lost cause.

A slight twist on the original suggestion: There should be a specific forum "New to the Mac" for the newcomers to the forum/Mac asking for tips on good software, etc..

Sticky for using Search now at top of both System&Software and Hardware forums.

that is all fine but i take exception to be corrected constantly as to thread titles, about supposedly inappropriate new threads and to threads being closed cause the supermods do not think them necessary...

what happened to free speech??
