Superdrive not recognizing CD/DVD

My Macbook Pro's Superdrive does not recognize ANY CD or DVD, blank or full.

I did a PMU reset (took out batt. hold on/off button for 5 sec. put in batt. and restart)

I did a PRam reset (hold cmd+option+P+R on startup)

did not change anything.

I verified that the drive was operational - started with the Snow Leopard instal disk (C pressed), the disc was correctly mounted and the install program launched.

Seems like a software/OS related problem.
Please advise.
 
Have you tried a CD/DVD cleaning disk in your Mac yet? Believe it or not this helps a lot.
