SWAT/Samba question

I'm wondering about the expediency of using SWAT in order to configure you smb.conf file. A strange quirk in SWAT is that the smbd daemon is never running according to the status page. However, a grep on ps shows that smbd is running. Also, looking at the logs shows that it started up and any attempt to start it from SWAT merely produces the message in the log that smbd is already running.
Fine.
What, however, does the Windows sharing icon do in System Preferences > Sharing? I would have thought that by clicking on it I am starting the smbd and possibly the nmbd daemons, but such is not the case. So what, in fact, does that do?
