switched isp provider & now no router?

i switched from dsl to cable broadband service. I got the router when i was still on pc platform. my mac mini grabbed the connection during setup & was a dream!

When i changed to cable broadband, the router no longer was in the loop - i need it in the loop to network other computers to the internet.

I don't know where to look on my apple - being a recent convert from windows. i don't know what to look for, either. when i try to route correctly and access the router thru the safari/mozilla or opera browser, i get nothing. Not only no internet, it doesn't see the router.

i have been advised to remove the router configurations and re-install. Where is it to remove it?

Any help would be appreciated.

What kind of router is it?

DSL and cable modem differ in their connection schemes: DSL is usually PPPoE, while a cable modem connection typically connects via DHCP. Your router was probably set up for PPPoE for your DSL connection, and now needs to be re-configured for DHCP for the cable modem connection. How to do this exactly depends on what brand and model of router you have.

Most routers can be accessed via a web browser on a computer hooked up to a LAN port on the router. Many routers use the address http://192.168.0.1 while others use http://192.168.1.1, but this can vary from model to model.

If you'd like to reset the router to the factory default settings, you can look for a small pinhole-sized button somewhere on the router. You would typically push this button with a paper clip or similar object and hold it in the pressed position for 10 to 30 seconds (while the router is powered on -- doing while it's off would probably do nothing).

If you can access the internet from another computer somewhere, you may want to search for a manual for the router online. Many companies such as D-Link and Linksys allow you to download the manuals for their routers in PDF format.

Thank you. This is a linksys router, cable & dsl wired setup. I forgot about the reset button. :) But I did try to access by the 192.168.1.1 and the variations that had been on it prior to the switch to cable.

I've got the "manual" such as it is. I 've only had the router about 3 months, but even that couldn't stop virus attacks on the PC, so I went to Apple.

However, I might call up the linksys folks once I can remove all traces in my OS - that's my main question right now- how to remove those settings?
