system fonts interacting with websites

I have just done a complete erase and install on my system, and I have only added the 2004 Adobe Font Collection (over 5,000 fonts), so I only have good, non-corrupted fonts and system fonts. I have disactivated all the fonts that have the word 'fraction' in the name, but I still get these wierd characters on certain sites (craigslist for example).
When I deactivated the fractions, my Mac Mail browser was no longer getting weird characters, but I still get them online.
Anyone else had this problem and know which fonts are the ones that overide the default fonts in certain instances?

I had this issue a while back and here's what I did:
Go to your Hard Drive/Library/Fonts folder
> Trash HelvFra (Helvetica Fractions)
> Restart
Apparently there's an issue with Helvetica Fractions and Helvetica Bold

You have more than one version of Helvetica installed. Unfortunately, OSX requires Helvetica.dfont to work properly. Completely trashing the Fractions fonts is all but necessary, but you also have to "manage" all the duplicate fonts in all three of the Library folders as well.

Then, go into your browser preferences and make sure you have "Western: Mac Roman" selected in the Fonts & Colors area.

Nice! I'll try this out. thanks guys. do you guys know of a way to get your font mgr. (linotype fontexplorer x in my case) to select all 'duplicate' fonts? I've looked around and can't seem to find that.

Okay, it looks like I've already trashed all copies of HelvFra because I noticed it's substitution, but I didn't know about the western mac roman thing. Mine was set at Mac Latin or something like that.
