Is there any way to change the available highlight colours in the System Preferences? The darkest one there is red, and it is too light; in fact, it looks more like light orange.
Choose 'Other...' from the Highlight Color drop-down, and change to whatever color/shade that you like.
Avoid using a color that hides the text instead of highlighting it.
