System preferences not opening

For the past few days I have not been able to open system preferences. When I click the icon nothing happens. I think it might have been caused by one of the following.

Running maintenence 3.4. I usually run this once in a while.

Turning something off in the activity monitor.

Can anybody help? Any clues?

Have you tried safe boot? just hold down shift after the chime and give it a try. I've found that oftentimes safeboot will help with little issues like that.

Thanks but safe booting did not fix the problem. Does anybody know if a particular service has to be running to open system preferences?

Maybe a preferences file is corrupted. I don't know which it will be and I don't know if it's safe to trash it but I suspect that might be the answer.

It would help if we knew what hardware and OS you are running!

Anyway, before you do anything, repair Disc Permissions.

I have already repaired disk permissions as well as repaired the disk with disk utilitiy. This did not help. Also tried removing the file:

com.apple.systempreferences.plist

in the preference library. Did not do anything eiter so i put it back.

My hardware/os is:

intel imac G5 20"

osx 10.46

I hate it when I make a suggestion and the OP remembers that he forgot to mention he already tried it. :(

(OS 10.4.6 perhaps?)

If you have another user account setup, boot into that and see if the Prefrerences will open.

If you don't have another user account setup, shame on you :(

Try trashing this file;

com.apple.systempreferences.000a27e3cb12.plist

the numbers probably won't be the same. File located here;

user/library/preferences/ByHost

It still does not open when logging in as another user. Just tried that. I also just tried removing the com.apple.systempreferences.000a27e3cb12.plist but no difference.

I guess I will have to reinstall??

I would download and run the 10.4.6 Combo Updater and see if that corrects the problem before reinstalling.
