Are you selecting the 'Apple, System Preferences' menu item?, or are you double clicking on the 'System Preferences' icon - in the '/Applications/' folder? - when the alert box appears.
Also, how about taking a snapshot ('Command <shift> 4' press the 'spacebar', then click on the alert box) of the error message, and attaching it to your reply?
