system responsible for enclosure issues

I have an Transmit brand enclosure, in which i have installed a 30GB HD. When transferring files, mostly big files (200MB) the system (Mac OSX 10.4.11) hangs. I have to restart it, to use it properly! After putting the drive to other macs, i realized that there is no problem with other computers. Therefore this must be a MacOSX system issue. Is there a way to check this, make a system examination though some utility or? Where do i start?

You can verify and repair the disk using Disk Utility. Simply launch it, highlight the hard drive in question, and the rest is pretty self-explanatory.

I would bet that the drive is formatted as FAT32, yes? If you use it solely with your Mac (and don't need to use the drive with Windows computers), then I would highly recommend reformatting the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This is also done via Disk Utility.

Formatting a drive erases everything on the drive, so back up the data if you need to before performing a partition and/or format procedure.

Yes it is Fat32 but im using it in Windows machines also so it can only be Fat32 formated. I forgot to mention though that problems occur in OSX 10.4.11 and not in Leopard, isnt that strange?

Update
Ι did use the disk utility and made a repair but the message "no prepair was needed" came up after it was done. Go figure!
