system updates via ISP

the update from system OS X 10.4.2 to 10.4.3 is 97MG. It takes an estimated 8 to 10 hours to download this update via ISP connection. I always get disconnected about half way through. I have disconnected the automatic email check feature as well as the energy saving features to not affect the downloading process

When visiting a university 50 miles away I had them download the update via broadband to CD and it took 3.5 minutes.

Now there is an update of 49MG for Quicktime....???

Are there some ideas out there for those of us who have no choice but to use ISP?

thanks for your reply. I had speed downloader but could not make it work with my system. That is my Safari downloader would keep kicking in and I had the same problem when I used the netscape browser. Is there a way to switch off the existing downloader?

Tell us more about your system. In my experience with Speed Download is that it integrates itself in Safari. There're 2 options for you. One is to re-do the SD installation by deleting the program and associated plists and emptying your trash then install it again and allow it to integrate with your browsers. The second is to allow the browser download manager to start then simply copy the download path into SD and stop the browser downloader.

I'd have someone download the updates for you and save them on CD-Rs, then send that to you. You don't have to update this stuff the minute it's available (Security Updates: Yes, I would, but those often aren't that big).

I repurchased the SD (speed downloader) and reinstalled after cleaning up after the first purchase and installation. The problems are the same - the SD will not integrate with my browser(OS X 10.4.4, Safari on iMac G-4). As suggested by "gphillipk" I copied the URL from the downloader that kicks in when using the safari system download feature into the SD and I get a 404 error message.

I am wondering if the authentication and agreement acceptance which comes up when using safari might have something to do with it? I did also go to the apple down load site for quicktime and copied the URL (http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/qt/nph-dnld) and tried to use that in the SD and it came up with error "can not find file". I must be missing something!?

Sure would like to hear some more on this subject

I am posting this just to let you know my discovery. after all the time I spend trying to make safari work with SD - I can tell you now it does not! I down loaded Firefox and than used SD and it worked.

Now just a comment on all that speed you are supposed to get with SPEED DOWNLOADER (SD) forget it. I am using ISP and I can not detect any speed improvement what so ever. However I like the SD for two reasons - better control over your download, accurate status info and when you get disconnected you can pick up where you left off. That feature makes SD worth having for me since I always get disconnected when loading down files that are larger than 15 MG.

Thanks to all who had input to this problem.
